Lineage

Lady Ilsa’s insights reminded me of the stark fact that while Gregor and I had a lot of similar interests, I knew very little about his background and personal life. It would not be fair to expect full transparency from him without offering the same in return. Considering how he skirted the subject whenever I mentioned Karl, part of me suspected he would not be candid if I asked him why he wanted to meet the most elusive Cursed One in Austria.

Did his interest in the undead priest have any connection with his and my brother’s broken friendship? Had Gregor’s college buddy died because their friend group had dabbled with dark magic? As much as I did not like viewing Karl in such a way, in truth I would not put it past him. Teuton priests trod a thin line between good and evil, for in ancient history each one of them stood as advocates between the community and Wuotan. The demon lord of wisdom and war, the overlord of the devilish river from which all Teutonic magic emerged.

Amira and Doro had just visited that horrific place to awaken the magic in my best friend’s spirit. That was the only way they could marry as equals rather than as a witch and a mundane human. In situations like that, I understood their motivations for seeking the help of a Black Priest, one who could use his demonic powers to ensure they would survive the blood-transfer. But I doubted Gregor had any need to offer his blood to a friend or lover. Besides, most Teutons just took the risk and asked a standard priest to conduct that particular ritual.

So what did Gregor want with an undead priest of Wuotan? I thought about it while we lounged in his suite watching a Lord of the Rings marathon on Sunday afternoon, snacking on a bag of popcorn. Maybe if I delved a little deeper into his personal life—offering more details about mine in return—the puzzle pieces might come together.
